Bill Worthen is a nationally recognized sustainability and collaborative design leader. Over his twenty-year career Bill has balanced policy development with professional and public advocacy, practice experience, industry research and peer-to-peer education. Bill has served as the sustainability consultant for several high-visibility projects that explore the practical application of leading edge sustainability strategies, energy performance and high-level LEED certifications for clients including: MGM Resorts International, Tishman Speyer and the Energy Foundation.
Bill served as a member of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s Green Building Task Force resulting in the city’s pioneering Green Building Ordinance, winner of the first World Green Building Council Government Leadership Award in 2011 and current member of the San Francisco Eco-District Formation Task Force. Bill has also represented his profession, serving as the AIA National Director and Resource Architect for Sustainability from 2010 to 2012, spearheading several cross-industry collaborative sustainability initiatives – most notably overseeing the development of the AIA Energy Modeling Practice Guide.
Bill’s most current work includes LEED consulting on outpatient and recreational facilities for the Veterans Association, collaborating on the sustainable design and LEED certification on the San Francisco Transbay Tower and 181 Fremont, two of the tallest and most sustainable buildings currently under design and construction on the west coast. Bill is also a member of United States Green Building Counsel’s LEED Implementation Committee, working on the development of LEED v4 and the Greenbuild Expo Program Working Group.
Bill recently wrote, Recycling and Flooring, an Architect’s Perspective for Hanley Wood University, published in the August 2013 issue of ARCHITECT Magazine, The essay covers the history of recycled content in building materials and the new role of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the use and selection of sustainable building materials.
Bill is the creator of the Urban Fabrick Collaborative, a small group of specialty consultants and industry-wide experts who understand the value and nuanced complexity of design, performance, beauty, building science and the power of effective, professional education and communication.
