Taberna 97 in NYC recently achieved LEED 2009 for Commercial Interiors (CI) Gold certification

Taberna 97 LEED 2009 Gold certification

Taberna 97, a new Portuguese restaurant located on St. Mark’s Place in the heart of New York’s East Village, recently achieved LEED 2009 for Commercial Interiors (CI) Gold certification. Urban Fabrick, Inc. worked directly for the ownership team to realize their dream of a restaurant and catering operation based on the principles of sustainability.

This commitment extended beyond the quality and the sourcing of the food itself to the physical aspect of the building. Occupying the full first floor of a 100+ year old six-story residential building on this famous street, pursuit of LEED certification for the restaurant was a natural fit and informed all aspects of the design. These included energy efficient LED lighting installed throughout the space, bathrooms featuring water-saving fixtures, and Energy-Star certified (and eligible) commercial kitchen equipment. The rear façade was re-built as a custom wood-framed storefront wall that can be opened fully to the backyard. Many of the interior finish materials, such as floor and wall tiles, are owner-provided items purchased in Portugal.

Urban Fabrick coordinated the LEED process with the architect, mechanical engineer, and general contractor to integrate sustainability features into the design, ensuring the project met performance thresholds stipulated by various LEED credits. Led by our CEO and President, Wolfgang Werner, the Urban Fabrick team generated the majority of LEED documentation provided to the Green Business Certification Inc.

With its new LEED Gold certification, Taberna 97 joins a small club of LEED-certified restaurants in New York City. Urban Fabrick is proud to have guided the team to this achievement. Congratulations Taberna 97!
